Zero Ducks

Brendan Drake and I hunted this morning. Woke up to frost and a gradual south east wind about 7 to 10 mph shortly after daybreak. Thought it would be a great morning, partly cloudy, cold and windy, but hardly saw any ducks and did not even fire a shot.

Added Fast Grass to Boat Blind

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="480" caption="Added fast grass to the boat blind last night!"]Added fast grass to the boat blind last night![/caption]

I'm still making improvements to the Boat Blind. I added fast grass mats all around it last night and tonight I picked up some fog lights. I want to mount a fog light in the front of my boat and the kit I picked up has a led rocker switch that lights up when the lights are turned on. There is stll alot of trash in the marsh around southwest Louisiana since hurricane Ike passed and the fog light is pretty much a life saver. I'll post up some pictures of that after I have it installed.

Aiptek Action-HD 1080p Camcorder

[caption id="attachment_24" align="alignright" width="150" caption="Aiptek Action-HD 1080p"]Aiptek Action-HD 1080p[/caption]

I picked this camera up last night after seeing another Aiptek last week. I did  a little research online before actualy making a purchased and chose this model because it is expandable up to a 32 gig SD card, has a 3x Optical zoom, and comes with a remote control. I plan on using it as my outdoor camera for hunting and fishing and did not want to spend a lot of money and this camera fell into that category thanks to an after Thanksgiving sale. So far I have to say this thing is great. The playback on my 50 inch 720p television looks excellent, although I'll mainly be uploading lower quality format to this site and burning home/hunting videos to DVD quality for archiving.

Here are a few specs:

  • 1080P HD at 30fps (frames per second) Perfect for achieving an astonishing close-up

  • Ideal for sports and other high-action events 720P HD at 60fps

  • 720P HD at 30fps
excelent quality for regular events like birthdays, etc... Helps you capture every detail

  • DVD quality at 30fps

  • CIF great for web uploads 30fps

  • 3x optical zoom and auto focus

  • Night Shot & LED light fucntionality Helps enable low-light recording

  •  2" macro zoom lensFor close-up video or photo shooting.

I think battery gets you about 60 minutes if you are shooting at 1080p or 720p at 60fps. About 120 minutes if you shoot at 720 at 30fps, and lower resolutions get you longer recording times. The nice view finder keeps track of all this for you and gives you a heads up display of how much record time you have left.

This camcorder is definatley a big thumbs up from way back for me. I can't wait to get in the marsh for some hunting footage. All future videos should be taken using this camera.

Coleman Watch w/ Digital Temp Gauge

Tempurature Watch
Tempurature Watch
This is the Caleman digital watch with a digital tempurature gauge. I had been looking for a watch with sunrise/sunset info but all the ones I can find are currently over $60. I picked this one up from the local Walmart for only $15. The watch came in a good size water/dust proof case and included a 7 in 1 multitool. The multitool and case are a nice addition for the money and the case is large enough to carry and cell phone plus wallet and additional space.

Now back to the watch. The watch itself is worth the $15 I spent and seems to be of sturdy construction, however I bought this particular model for the tempurature gauge. According to the instructions, in fahrenheit mode there is a +/- 4 degrees in accuracy and the watch will not take an accurate reading while worn. That means you have to take it off, wait over 10 minutes and still be up to 4 degrees off.

Overall I have to give this watch a bad review for the simple fact that I bought it for the tempurature feature and it is basicaly useless.

Boat Blind, marsh tested!

Well, I had the first test for the boat blind this weekend. Over all it passed with flying colors. Ducks came in and never had a clue that I was there. It was the first time I had ducks light in my decoys at this location because we had always just hunted in the boat parked along the edge of the pond with only camo netting drapped over the side of the boat. I attached more grass and whips on the second hunt the next day. I am still thinking of adding FastGrass mats?

Hunters Specialties Camo Burlap

12'x4' worth of camo burlap for $10 what a bargin, if it holds up. I picked this up from a local store to conceal a boat blind. The burlap seems to be sturdy and the camo pattern is desent. I plan to use it on the weekends with part of it being in water. I'll let you know if it makes it through the season.

Black & Decker 3 Speed RTX Rotary Tool

I recently picked up this model to shave down some plastic pieces for a project I was working on. I purchased the Craftsman RTX for $25 at a local retail store. This particular model came with a wrench, a few sanding bits and a storage bag. I was happy with the performance and price paid.

New Boat Blind

Spent all day yesterday putting together a boat blind I have been planning for about a week now. Starting to look pretty good, I see a few modifications I need to make and we'll have to add some more grass to the outside to help it blend in better.
